Boiler Alkalinity

What is Boiler Alkalinity

What is Boiler Alkalinity?
Boiler Alkalinity is the water pH within the boiler.  This product is typically purchased as Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide in either 25 or 50% solutions.  Boiler Alkalinity 1425 is a concentrated liquid alkalinity builder for the treatment of boiler systems. The product provides the maximum alkalinity adjustment per pound of product available. It is recommended for use in any boiler system requiring additional alkalinity to assure proper reactions occur in the boiler water. The product will not add additional carbon dioxide to the steam produced.

How much Boiler Alkalinity should be maintained in the boiler water?
Ideally, the boiler alkalinity for steam boilers should be above 10.5 pH and a total alkalinity ratio to silica of 3:1 should be maintained (for high pressure boilers). A boiler alkalinity builder that is designed to increase the boiler water pH. A higher pH will ensure the polymer works and the overall corrosion rates are low within the boiler. For hot water boilers, a pH is important, but providing a good passivation is more important. If you have bronze metals within the recirculation system, make sure not to drive the pH too high. Bronze metals will corrode at high pH levels.

What safety concerns should I have when handling concentrated forms of Boiler Alkalinity?
Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide is a very dangerous chemical to handle, so handle with care.  This product will cause extensive skin damage.  Please refer to the MSDS before handling this product.

How should this chemical be fed?
Boiler Alkalinity 1425 is usually mixed in a chemical feed tank using good quality condensate, softened water, or feedwater. Tanks, pumps, piping and valves should be made of stainless steel, polyethylene, or PVC. This product should be injected near the center of the water with an injection quill.

What control tests should be used?
Normally controlled by an alkalinity test or pH test on the boiler water. Control ranges can vary widely depending upon both makeup water characteristics and system operating conditions and will be specified by the technical representative servicing the facility.

What are the storing requirements?
Keep in a tightly closed container. Store indoors. Recommended storage temperature is 50 F - 105 F (10 C - 40 C). Do not reuse container. Dispose of empty container in compliance with federal, state/provincial and local laws and regulations.
