Glycol Corrosion Inhibitor

ChemWorld SR1 Glycol Corrosion Inhibitor.
  • 5 gallons converts 138 gallons of pure 99.9% Propylene Glycol into a 95% solution of Inhibited Propylene Glycol.
  • 5 gallons of ChemWorld SR1 will protect 690 gallons of 20% glycol solution from corrosion.
  • This protect may be ordered in clear or in pink form.
  • This product is not approved for use in Food and Beverage facilities.
  • For food and beverage facilities applications, use Chemworld 811.
  • 55 gallons of ChemWorld SR1 will protect 7,500 gallons of 20% glycol solution. 1 gallon of ChemWorld SR1 will protect 140 gallons of 20% glycol solution from corrosion.
  • For applications such as the working fluid in a water jet cutting machine or a high pressure washer the maximum dilution is 1:200 or 0.005% dilution rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a Glycol Corrosion Inhibitor that will protect Zinc?
Chemworld SR1 glycol inhibitor is a formulation of phosphate/molybdate/azole (TTA).

Zinc is more reactive than iron and forms a sacrificial zinc oxide in the presence of moisture thus stopping moisture and air from reaching the metal below. Like all metals, zinc corrodes when exposed to air and moisture however it does not “rust” like most other metals. For example, iron reacting with water and air will form rust. These hydrated iron oxides are brittle and flake away exposing more metal for further corrosion. Zinc on the other hand reacts to form a thin oxide layer producing zinc hydroxide. This layer acts as a protective barrier that prevents air and moisture from contacting the underneath preventing further corrosion and deterioration.

Zinc being a reactive metal and will slowly corrode over time. Zinc’s corrosion rate is about 1/30th that of steel. Many “rust inhibiting” additives are comprised of zinc phosphate. Zinc-rich coatings are used in processes known as galvanizing to prevent corrosion. Molybdate is also a widely used corrosion inhibitor of metallic materials by forming a protective film in corrosive environments. In summary, we do not have specific data on the effectiveness of the inhibitor on Zinc however I would imagine that the inhibitor would aid in minimizing the corrosion rate of zinc.
My customer had one of his chillers running +42F with regular water and it stuck in the "ON" position and nobody caught it. The chiller burst. He has several chillers in the building and may convert them all to glycol, or may only convert just the one. The chiller that burst holds 25 gallons with 5 gallons of piping capacity is 30 gallons. He wants to add 5 gallons of your Inhibited Propylene Glycol to give him an approximate 15F to 17F burst protection. My concern is that he will be running less than 30% glycol and won't have enough inhibitor level. How much SR1 would I need to add to bring the inhibitor up to where it should be? I could always tell him to add 10 gallons of glycol to make 30%, but don't want to hurt his heat exchange capacity, that is why I was thinking SR1. It is an "open" chilled water system where a Nitrite based inhibitor may convert to Nitrate and therefore be ineffective.
Ideally, this product is designed to be used in a closed loop. If the open loop has evaporation, you will need to add the product on a continuous basis based on how much water blowdown is required to prevent the system from scaling. If it is an open loop with no evaporation, it technically is a closed loop and you can use the product. For a 30 gallon virgin PG system, you need roughly 1 gallon on SR1 corrosion inhibitor.
Will the Chemworld SR1 Glycol Corrosion Inhibitor protect a Cupro-Nickel heat exchanger from corrosion?
We do not have sufficient operational corrosion data on copper-nickel alloys. Chemworld believes it is routinely used in seawater applications due to its ability to resist corrosion from seawater. Our SR1 Glycol Inhibitor contains phosphate/molybdate/azole. We have no data to support this assumption however we would imagine having the inhibitor would offer greater corrosion resistance versus uninhibited glycol.
