Ammonia Chillers are commonly used in many food and beverage facilities to maintain very low process temperatures. The location of NH3 chillers is commonly located on the manufacturing rooftop which makes is difficult at apply or injecting your chemical treatment program. If possible, it may be easier to use 55-gallon drums or totes and physically position the containers on the rooftop prior to injecting the chemical into the NH3 system.
When delivering tanker size loads of Propylene Glycol to ammonia chillers the trucks come with a standard 80 ft of hose), although you may request a longer hose upon ordering. The truck pump is rated at 23psi. 23 psi is equivalent to 50 feet of head pressure when pumping propylene glycol solutions.
Depending on the total length of hose and diameter, the pressure drop (resistance to flow) would reduce it further, meaning there is no way you will have enough head to pump the fluid up under safe conditions certain rooftop deliveries. It is recommended that extreme caution is taken when pumping higher than 3, maximum 4 stories. Also, keep in mind the friction of the horizontal length of the hose before going vertical.
A rupture of rubber hose during off-loading would lead to a significant safety incident. It is far better to use hard piping (can be a temporary pipe made of CPVC or similar) or if possible tie into the system at grade level and then use a system pump (or a temporary booster pump) to pump the fluid up the requisite to beyond 3 stories. The potential for loss of fluid is greatly reduced and higher pressure can be accommodated (which allows greater elevation) by using proper equipment like hard piping and a booster positive displacement gear pump.
