Iron Phosphates Detergent

Steam, Pressure Spray, and Immersion Detergent Iron Phosphate or Aluminum and Ferrous Metals. Concentrated steam and high temperature spray wand cleaner and iron phosphate. Aluminium activated. ChemWorld STM Xtrem is:
  • A blend of buffered phosphates, water conditioners, and non-heavy metal coating accelerators in combination with a high level of controlled foaming detergents in a convenient liquid form.
  • pH balanced so that little or no pH adjustment is required.
  • Designed for use in industrial immersion, non-recirculating spray, steam phosphatizing systems, or by hand wipe.
  • Produces an iridescent blue coating on ferrous components which provides improved paint adhesion and corrosion resistance for the finish.
  • Produces a light coating and etch on aluminum, zinc, and galvanized surfaces.
  • ChemWorld STM Xtrem meets or exceeds TTC-490D, Type II military specification by providing an iron phosphate coating in the range of 35 to 80 mgs/ft2.
USE INFORMATION:
  • Concentration: Immersion: 1 to 4% by volume.
  • Steam / Pressure Spray: 0.5 - 2% by volume.
  • Hand Wipe: 2% by volume.
  • Temperature: 125 - 212°F (Recirculating spray); Ambient to 212°F (Hand wipe, Pressure spray, Immersion)
  • Target Operating pH: 4.4 - 4.9

For best results, ChemWorld STM Xtrem should be followed by a water rinse, but the ChemWorld STM Xtrem was specifically formulated to accept paint without being rinsed.

I am currently sandblasting semi-trailers prior to powder coating them. I am told that a phosphate wash is far superior to sandblasting as it creates better adhesion for the powder. I was planning on washing the trailer with a hot pressure washer but not sure where to go from there. The trailers are made from mild steel.
The best treatment would be sand blasting followed by our STM Xtrem @ 1%BV to clean and prep the metal for paint.
We are looking for a cleaning product to clean and prep carbon steel 10” channel and mild steel for painting. We are dealing with scale and oils from the steel manufacturing process and would prefer a one step chemical.
A single step iron phosphate will do the trick on the oils and prep the metal for paint but the scale may or may not be removed. It really depends on the severity of the scale. Most steel will do fine with a detergent iron phosphate alone. Use our ChemWorld STM Xtrem at 2%BV with water. Make down with HOT water in a garden sprayer. It's important to spray it in a temperature controlled space (not outside in freezing weather).

Better results will be obtained if the metal is cleaned and descaled, then rinsed, prior to the iron phosphate treatment. Pre-cleaning and descaling with Rust Citric at 5%BV followed by a rinse will do well when it comes to removing scale and oil.

What is the shelf life of the STM XTREM?
The shelf life of the product in the original container is 3 years.
Would a Hudson sprayer work for application? Or do you recommend a pressure washer with a chemical reservoir?
If you use a Hudson sprayer, then the part must be clean (and/or sandblasted) prior. We would use the STM XTREM at 3%BV in water. Let it sit for 5-minutes, then rinse with water.
I am looking to bring powder coating in house and need to discuss our options with regard to pretreating the parts we will be coating. Initially the bulk of what we will be processing will be Aluminum with some steel but anticipate moving towards 50/50. Also, I should note that I am looking to grow into this operation using our current spray booth and oven and pre treating by hand. That being said, I am hoping to use hand held pump sprayers to degrease and apply some type of iron phosphate solution (possibly the STM-XTREM). My biggest concerns are simplicity of the process and adherence to regulations.
This would be the best three stage process to paint both aluminum and steel in one system.

Starting with pump sprayers:

3). ChemWorld ZR Poly Seal - Non-chrome zirconium polymer nanotechnology sealing rinse. Provides salt spray results approaching and in some cases equaling chrome.
